On Wednesday 11 April the Rt. Hon. Alistair Burt MP joined doctors and patients at the official opening of new GP premises in the heart of Sandy.
The newly refurbished premises at Shannon Court, which opened to patients in December last year, replaces the Kings Road site and will provide local GP and community health care services with bespoke and modern facilities to meet the growing needs of over 6,000 patients.
At the event, Dr Jonathan Graffy, Lead GP, said: ‘ We have come so far from being a porta-cabin with a surgery attached, but this is only the starting point of where we need to be to be properly sustainable.
“Our aim has always been to support our GP colleagues and community staff to provide the best healthcare possible to the residents of Sandy, and we will work closely with NHS England to ensure we continue to do this.
“As the number of patients continues to grow, and the way we support healthcare conditions change and develop, it’s vitally important that we have space and facilities to provide appropriate treatment and services as close to the patient’s home as possible. We are very grateful to our local councillor and residents for their ongoing help and support with this project.”
Local MP Alistair Burt officially opened the new premises with a heartfelt speech welcoming everyone old and new who has been part of the journey, saying:
“I saw the pressures that Kings Road was under and I wanted to help. It hasn’t been easy getting here, but the friendly attitude and sense of belonging is the hallmark of this excellent surgery.”
The evening was also attended by members of the surgery’s Patient Participation Group (PPG). The 11 strong team has been an integral part of this journey from the beginning. They have worked closely with staff and patients during the surgery move, and have been integral in ensuring everyone’s opinion has been listened to.
Dr Graffy had the PPG a task to enhance the surgery’s walls with artwork which has come from two sources. There will be a loan of eight pieces from Paintings in Hospital (PIH) who provide art that inspires better health and wellbeing. In addition to this there will be a collection of professional photographs from Emma Hare, born and raised in Sandy and who now lives in London. Emma was extremely pleased to help and commented: “The older you get, the more you realise how important roots are”.
