The first free shuttle buses taking parents and children to hospitals in Milton Keynes and Luton leave Bedford Hospital this morning just after nine o’clock.
The white minibuses will leave from outside the A&E department on the Ampthill Road at Bedford Hospital. They start at 9.10, then run every two hours from 11am until 7.00pm (see Your Health).
The service is funded by Bedfordshire CCG which has responded to families’ concerns that they will have to travel out of Bedford as a result of the closure of paediatric services at Bedford Hospital. It is free for all families whose children are having medical care at either Milton Keynes or Luton and Dunstable hospitals.
There is no branding on the buses but hospital destinations will be clearly marked on the windscreen.
Dr Diane Gray, director of strategy at BCCG said: “It was clear from the public meeting last week, that transport is a major concern for families whose children can no longer be treated at Bedford Hospital. The free shuttle transport will help support families who don’t have a car or find it difficult to travel by public transport.
