We were commissioning a new Bedfordshire wide Community Epilepsy Specialist Nursing Service and wanted to understand what was important to patients with epilepsy and their family/carers.
|You told us:||Our response:|
You felt abandoned after diagnosis and wanted a person centred service with fast access to advice, support and signposting to other appropriate services.
Your suggested priorities for improvement included:
Personalised care (services that meet the needs of the individual).
Psychological support for patients and carers.
Support for young carers including psychological support.
Help with employment and employers – continuing working after initial diagnosis, getting back into work after absence, education for employers.
We have commissioned a Community Epilepsy Specialist Nurse (ESN), they will become the first point of contact and care coordinator for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy.
The new service will ensure that patients have fast access to advice and psychological support
The ESN will carry out follow up appointments and reviews, be available by phone/email for advice on symptoms and medication and provide urgent appointments for patients having a change of symptoms.
