Support for people with Diabetes 'You Said, We Did'

We visited the Bedfordshire Diabetes UK Patients Group in December 2019.

You told us: Our response:

It would be useful to have a starter pack for new member joining the Bedfordshire Diabetes Group.  The pack should contain information about living with Diabetes, dietary advice and guidance on what to do in an emergency,

Awareness of diabetes should be promoted through schools, so children and young people have a better understanding from an early age,

Dietary advice for patients from BAME backgrounds is needed,

The DESMOND team at Bedford hospital are in the process of creating a starter pack for patients, this will include some Diabetes UK leaflets.

We will share your suggestion with our public health colleagues regarding raising diabetes awareness in local schools.

Diabetes UK have recently published dietary guidance for the BAME community.  Education sessions are now running once a month for BAME groups and individuals.

The DESMOND nurse at Bedford Hospital is delivering a structured education programme for people with diabetes.
